Community Association Seeks New Treasurer

After 7 years, Robert will be stepping down as the Community Association treasurer at the Association’s AGM on Wednesday 22nd March, which will be held at the village hall 7.30pm.

Robert will continue to support the Community Association in addition to pursuing his other interests.

We now need to find a new treasurer, the role is honorary, and the job is acting as the Association’s Bookkeeper, preparing accounts for annual examination, renewing annual insurance policy and attending committee meetings (usually 6 a year and it is understandable that people may not able to make every meeting).

If you are interested in this role and wish to discuss, please email chair@fvca.org.uk

If you take on the role, you will receive support from Robert and the rest of the team.

Keyless car theft prevention advice

Police in North Worcestershire would like to reassure local people that they are aware of a number of thefts of vehicles recently and to ask that owners are doing what they can do to help prevent further thefts.

Sergeant Dan Townsend said: “Following a recent spate of keyless car thefts and attempted thefts of other vehicles in and around North Worcestershire, we have increased patrols in areas that have been targeted.

“Keyless entry vehicles, while convenient to the owner, are however an extremely easy target for theft. Many car key fobs allow for ‘keyless entry’, a system in which the car can read the signal of your fob so you can open the door without pressing a button.

“Unfortunately the signal sent out by the fob can be captured by criminals using a cheap and readily available tool called a ‘relay device’. If they capture – or clone – your key’s signal they can then open your car and drive it away.

“One of the simplest ways to protect your keys is to invest in something known as a ‘Faraday Pouch’. This is a small pouch for your keys which is lined with metal foil which the radio waves cannot penetrate.

“You can also add a device to physically immobilise the car such as a steering wheel lock. Any physical device like this will act as a very visible deterrent and given the additional time and effort that will be needed to overcome these devices will make would be thieves think twice about targeting your vehicle.

“We also recommend fitting anti-snap locks to front and back doors of your home and making sure all windows are locked and secure. These are relatively inexpensive and can be fitted very quickly.

“While there is a lot the public can do to protect their own property I would like to reassure everyone that we are working hard to catch those responsible and we have several investigations ongoing.

“Much of our intelligence comes from concerned members of the public who may have seen people hanging around, acting suspiciously. Please, if you see anyone acting suspiciously near your car or your property, call us on 101 and let us know.”

Preventing keyless car theft:

  • Ensure your vehicle is properly locked and keep keys far away from doors and windows to ensure the vehicle is no longer in range of the key’s signal.
  • Place keys in a metal/foiled lined box or container, or another container that blocks the keys signal from reaching the vehicle when it’s not in use.
  • Switch off the key’s wireless signal when you don’t need New Pageyour vehicle. If you are unsure if the key has this function, find out in your owner’s manual.
  • You could also purchase an aftermarket security device, such as a steering wheel lock, a driveway parking post or even a wheel clamp. Even if the thieves are able to access and start your car, these should prevent them from driving away. Many criminals will consider bypassing these as ‘too much hassle’.
  • Other steps include checking if there are any software updates for the car itself, remaining vigilant for unusual activity in your area and having an aftermarket immobiliser or tracker fitted.More information and crime prevention advice is available on our website hereIf you have information but don’t feel comfortable speaking to police, you can speak to the independent charity Crimestoppers. It is 100% anonymous, they never ask your name and they cannot trace your call or I.P address. You can visit crimestoppers-uk.org or call 0800 555 111.

Cost of Living Scams

Criminals are still using the cost of living crisis to scam the public

– do not become a victim –

Action Fraud are repeating their warning about cost of living scams in the lead up to Christmas

So once again we are encouraging members of the public to be extra vigilant against fraud, especially in sharing your personal and financial details with people you do not know. Do not let the fraudsters cash in on the cost of living crisis,

and please make sure you share this message with any friends and family who may be more vulnerable.

Common scams that are still circulating right now include:

• Energy Bill Rebates

• Cost of Living Payments

• Fuel Vouchers, Phone Bill discounts and Supermarket offers

• Fake Investment opportunities

Also beware of Non-Delivery and Non-Payment Scams.

• Non–Delivery Scam means a buyer pays in advance for goods or services online but those items are never received

• Non-Payment Scam means the seller sends goods sold via an online sales site but the seller never gets paid

Remember that criminals are expert at gaining your confidence and impersonating Government Agencies, Utility companies, Businesses and the Police.

As stated before, If it looks too good to be true it probably is.

Always be aware, and do not let Fraudsters and Scammers ruin your Christmas.

Superb Festive Sing-along

Enjoyable Carols Around The Christmas Tree on Wednesday 21st December, it was nice to see a good number of residents plus our local Safer Neighbourhood Team from Bromsgrove Police joined in with the festive singing.

Avian Influenza confirmed near Bromsgrove

Avian Influenza confirmed near Bromsgrove: all livestock/bird keepers please read

3km Protection Zone includes part of Fairfield

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed on 26 November 2022 at a premises near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. A 3km Protection Zone and 10km Surveillance Zone were put in place around the premises. Affected birds on the infected premises will be humanely culled.

You can check if you are under restriction by using APHA’s interactive map which can be found here.

Details of the measures that apply in these zones can be found in the declaration here.

The NFU can provide their members with guidance on what to do if you are in a Disease Control Zone which includes information on disease control measures and licensing. This information is available here and please do get in touch if you need any guidance or support.

Please be aware, if you have any poultry on your farm, even just a few chickens in the garden (this makes you a poultry keeper) and if any part of your CPH falls within one of the Disease Control Zones then restrictions will also apply to the movement of ANY of your livestock (including cattle, horses etc). A general licence is now available on the government website which can be used to transport livestock as long as certain conditions are met, including ensuring there has been no contact between livestock and poultry or captive birds for 21 days prior to movement.

If parts of a single holding (with one CPH) are in different zones, then the whole of the site is considered to be in the zone with the highest level of restriction. If you have more than one holding and they have separate CPH’s, any holding with a single CPH where the entire holding is outside of the zone will not be subject to the additional restrictions that apply within the zones.

Licensing:

If your premises is in one of the Disease Control Zones, a movement licence will be required for certain activities. Specific licences can be obtained from the APHA by using their online licensing portal.

Please ensure you give the APHA as much notice as possible as it can take time to issue licences. Complex and high-risk movements will require extra time to assess and process.

There are general licences available for certain movements, more information on these can be found on the government website.

General information and guidance:

  • Further DEFRA Guidance on Avian influenza can be found here.
  • For all members with poultry please do follow good biosecurity practice. The NFU have biosecurity resources available here
  • If you haven’t already please do register your poultry on the national poultry register here – registering means APHA can contact keepers with advice and latest news on disease outbreaks.
  • To keep up to date on the latest information the NFU have an Avian Influenza hub which contains advice and information and can be found here.

Marking the Coronation of King Charles III

On Saturday 5th May 2023, King Charles will be crowned in full splendour in a ceremony that has remained essentially the same over a thousand years, and last seen in the United Kingdom in 1953.

For some people this ceremony may be the only coronation that they will ever see.

As a community, how do we mark the accession and coronation of King Charles III?

Do you have any suggestions for initiatives that can celebrate the life of the late Queen and the good health of our King?

How should we celebrate the coronation?  With a single event of a weekend full of events?  What would you attend?

Or, dare we ask, not bother?

The coronation may be 5 months away, but planning must start today. Please email your suggestions to admin@fvca.org.uk

It’s Your Community, be part of your Association to help shape where you live

The next Community Association Committee Meeting is on Wednesday 23rd November 2022 at 7.30pm in the Barton Room at the Village Hall.

Below the agenda, which appears long, but most are one/two-line updates.

Item 5: A step-by-step guide to setting up a charity can be found at https://www.gov.uk/set-up-a-charity At this stage, we are considering whether to register a charity, and if it is agreed further work will be required, which will need to be approved by the FVCA committee before putting to the Community. If it is agreed by the FVCA committee and approved by the Charity Commission that we become a Registered Charity, any application to become a Registered Charity and change to the constitution would require a motion at an AGM or EGM, and if approved, committee members would become charity trustees; our next AGM should be in March 2023. Should it be decided that we do register as a charity – and should we be accepted by the Charity Commission – in addition to being able to apply for more grants, we would also be able to claim gift aid.

Post Box Update

Email received 3rd October from Deborah Buey, Escalated Resolution Team, Royal Mail:

“I have leased (sic) with the Manager, he has advised this has been passed to the company Romec that place the Post Boxes on behalf of Royal Mail. I am sorry to advise at this time we do not know when this is going to be sited in the village.

I am sorry that I can not be of any further assistance at this time.”

No further information is known, we do not know which of the four suggested sites have been identified, but it does look like that progress is being made to restore a postal collection service in the village.

According to the Royal Mail website, Romec was launched in 2002, by Royal Mail as a fully-fledged facilities management company and in 2017 “the Romec and Royal Mail Group Property companies combined and are known as ‘Royal Mail Property & Facilities Solutions’.” About Us | Royal Mail Property & Facilities Management Services (royalmailpfs.com)

Festive Fairfield’s Advent Calendar 2022

After the success of the last two years, and many residents wishing to see it again, Fairfield will once again recreate a neighbourhood Advent Calendar.

What is a Village Advent Calendar?

On a given date, something festive is placed in the window (or garden) of a property in Fairfield, that can be viewed by people passing by.  The display staying in place until the end of Christmas day.  Examples of displays are: Christmas wreaths, The whole Nativity Scene, Candles, Father Christmas, Twelves Days of Christmas, Santa & Rudolf in the snow, Winter tree wonderland, and so on.

How can I take part?

Email admin@fvca.org.uk with your address details, your preferred “unveil” date (1st to 24th December) and an outline of your display (to reduce likelihood of duplication – it would be fantastic if we had at least 24 different displays).  We will then confirm your calendar “unveil” date.

For the Advent Calendar to works, displays must not be unveiled until the stated “unveil” date.

Then, during December, residents and visitors can wander around the village, enjoying the festive displays.  We will publish a map of properties taking part in late November, this can be downloaded from the village website’s Festive Fairfield page Festive Fairfield – Fairfield Village Community Association (fvca.org.uk), a map will also get posted on the village hall (outside) noticeboard.

If you visit a display, take a photo and share on our twitter feed @Fairfield_Info or email it to us admin@fvca.org.uk

Message following the death of Queen Elzabeth

Message from the Chairman, Fairfield Village Community Association

This evening, residents mourn the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth, a sovereign that had led by example, and her service to the United Kingdom and Commonwealth will never be forgotten.

Residents of Fairfield, Wildmoor & Stoneybridge are in deep shock, and reflecting on what Queen Elizabeth means to them.

Queen Elizabeth touched all our lives, she was a constant thread, and she will be known as Elizabeth The Great.

The crown has passed to her son, now King Charles 3rd. Our thoughts and prayers are with His Majesty and the Royal Family.

We wish His Majesty good health and long may he reign over us.

God Save The King

Scam Warning: THE RISING COST OF LIVING

We are all very aware of the current rising cost of living and no more so than the Scammers and Fraudsters who prey on the public’s emotions with tempting offers of rebates, discounts and prize awards. It is quite likely that these will be on the increase in the coming months.

At over one third of the reported crime, Fraud is extremely high on the number of the reported crimes in the region. Even more worryingly the actual number of Frauds and Scams may well be much higher as many victims are too ashamed or embarrassed to report the crime.

Never be afraid to report any such Frauds immediately to Action Fraud at the contact details at the foot of this message.

Whilst everyone wants to make savings, our awareness must be raised to the many and various, very authentic looking e-mails and texts, as the Fraudsters up their game in light of the current crisis.

For example, Scammers are taking advantage of the cost of living crisis and impersonating energy providers in very authentic looking emails to trick people into sharing their personal details.

A typical example of a current scam, now circulating, comes from British Gas offering an energy bill rebate of £315.

  • The email looks genuine as it uses the British Gas logo and brand and may even contain the account number
  • However it is not addressed to the account holder, only the email address of the customer
  • British Gas will always address you by your full name or surname, and will never ask you confirm or provide personal details via an email
  • Always check such emails for spelling and grammar errors, and check out the sender’s email address to make sure it is, as listed, on the company website or on any invoices you have
  • Finally, never click on any links within such emails. The email may not ask for cash, but sharing your personal details may open the door for scammers to access your bank accountsWhilst this is just one example, the tricks and ploys used by Scammers are many and various, as highlighted in previous messages.Examples of other fake messages circulation at the moment include the following:
  • An email claiming to be from OFGEM claiming the recipient is due a refund; OFGEM would never make such an offer and the email address of the sender info@rebate-ogem.com is obviously fake.
  • Phone Calls claiming to be from your local authority asking for bank details to make payments for Energy Rebates or Household Support Funds. Local Authorities will never ask for such details over the phone.
  • Fake parcel delivery messages claiming to be from genuine Parcel Delivery services, with clickable links to make a payment of a delivery charge or provide personal details – never be tempted to “Click”
  • A plethora of fake money saving schemes such as food giveaways and fuel gift cardsFinally, as people search for bargains through online second hand sales sites they become easy targets by paying for items which never arrive or even exist. Research the seller first, then try and pay by credit card where possible or select another secure method of payment that protects the payer.Take Five To Stop Fraud
  • Stop: Taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information could keep you safe.
  • Challenge: Could it be fake? It’s okay to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.
  • Protect: If you think you’ve been a victim of fraud, contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud online at actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.For further information visit:https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/https://takefive-stopfraud.org.uk/

Launching Foodie Fairfield

Fairfield Village Community Association is launching a new food market – Foodie Fairfield – to provide an opportunity for people in the Bromsgrove area to buy good quality local produce direct from the producers.

The stalls at Foodie Fairfield will show just how much great food is produced in or around the Bromsgrove area.  There will be a wide range of locally-sourced bread, meat, cheese, eggs, vegetables and fruit along with a host of other items such as savoury pies, cider, fruit juices, honey, jams, cakes, and many other goodies.

A spokesperson for the Association said that local people are keen support local small businesses.  Foodie Fairfield will help those people to reduce their food-miles by enabling them to buy food from local farmers and artisans.

Foodie Fairfield will be held in Fairfield Village Hall on the first Saturday morning of each month.  The first event will be on Saturday, 3rd September.  The event will be held in Fairfield Village Hall and the doors will be open from 9 o’clock until noon.  There is ample, free parking behind the hall so buyers will not have to struggle carrying their purchases a long distance.

Further details about Foodie Fairfield can be found on the village website (www.fvca.org.uk) or on our Facebook page.

Your Community Needs You

We need three residents of Fairfield, Wilmoor & Stoneybridge to join the committee, meeting approximately 5 times a year, each meeting usually lasting an hour, in the evening at the pub.  Your role will be to help provide the required checks on the Chairman & Treasurer, to act as a sounding board, put forward suggestions and represent the views of the community.

The Association has done a lot of good work in the community, whether it is organising events, keeping our village tidy, coordinating Neighbourhood Watch, SmartWater rollout and lobbying for improvements. Please do give five hours a year for where you live.  If you can help email chair@fvca.org.uk

Reporting Pension Scams

Why should you report?

Pension scams ruin lives. On average, victims lose £75,000! With some losses in the millions. For some, it’s their whole life savings and once the money’s gone, it’s often gone for good. Criminals’ tactics are constantly evolving and the nature of them means they can be hard to spot. So, it’s difficult to understand the true scale of threat.

What should you report?

It is illegal to cold call consumers to talk about pension products, if you have received an unsolicited call, you should report this to Action Fraud straight away (details below).

Report any information you think could be relevant including the name and contact information of those involved as well as related materials such as websites and brochures.

When should you report?

You should report if you believe a scam has already happened or if you suspect that a pension scam could be taking place or are suspicious of those involved.

Who should you report to?

In England, Northern Ireland and Wales you should report fraud, cyber-crime or concerns about a potential scam to Action Fraud via www.actionfraud.police.uk/reporting-fraud-and-cyber-crime or on 0300 123 2040.

Get Safe Online

Get Safe Online is the UK’s leading source of unbiased, factual, and easy-to understand information on online safety
Website Checker: A new initiative has been set up by Get Safe Online in collaboration with a number of partners (including the National Trading Standards Scams Team) to establish a way for people to check whether a website is likely to be legitimate or a scam. If you are getting adverts when on social media or just surfing online, a good way to check if these are real is to visit www.getsafeonline.org/checkawebsite and type the website into the search bar and hit enter! The results you get can help you make your own decision on whether to buy from that website or not and you can do this before you even visit the site. The website checker looks at over 40 data sources to formulate its fraud score. The tool was originally devised in 2012 and has been the subject of continuous improvement by the ScamAdviser technical team ever since.

Community Celebrates The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Over the weekend 4th-5th June, three events were organized to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, bringing members of our community, family and friends together at the Village Hall.

On the Saturday we held an Afternoon Tea and Live Stream of the Epsom Derby, the sandwiches were fantastic, the cakes were magnificent, and the complementary prosecco flowed

In the evening we live streamed the Jubilee Concert from Buckingham Place, which saw people singing along to George Ezra’s “Shotgun” and being spellbound by the Queen’s sketch with Paddington Bear.  The bar was provided by our friends at Woodcote Brewery.

To end the festivities, on the Sunday, there was the traditional Platinum Jubilee Party with games, a quiz and the live streaming of the Jubilee Pageant.  People left with a complementary bottle of beer.

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that came to our celebratory events and decked properties Red, White & Blue to help celebrate this historic event.

Another HUGE THANK YOU to all the volunteers who organized the weekend events, organized the scavenger hunt, made the sandwiches, baked cakes. washed up, the list goes on.  Without YOU the events would not have happened and being a success that will be remembered for many years to come.

If you have any photographs of our community festivities, email them to admin@fvca.org.uk for archiving. If you have any information regarding who is in the photograph please share in your email.

In years to come people will be very grateful for your photographs, which will bring back many happy memories and will also be a reminder of who lived in our community.

For photos of our Afternoon Tea visit our Pictorial History page

Recording History

We invite households to send a photo of themselves, preferably of them outside their house, recording who was living in the village at the time of the jubilee.

The photographs will be incorporated into a montage, which we hope will be put on display at the Village Hall, and digital copy held in archive.  Residents may wish to provide some background information, such as names & any other information relating to the history of the property.

Email photograph, address & any additional information to admin@fvca.org.uk  Addresses will not be shared, this will be to verify that you live in our community.  We ask for your consent that addresses can be held in archive for future historical reference.
